Latin Latin Grammys Honors Juan Gabriel November 05, 2009 – Latin By Leila Cobo, L.A.
Juan Gabriel, the fabled composer and showman extraordinaire, was feted as the Latin Academy’s 2009 Person of the year in an evening that culminated with him singing accompanied by his mariachi band for nearly an hour, often standing on tables and chairs in the middle of the audience. The jubilant Juan Gabriel gave heartfelt speeches, received $50,000 from Henessy for his children’s charity, Semjase, toasted the audience and even sank to his knees before Italian diva Laura Pausini. “Laura, you are my idol,” he cooed after Pausini performed. The Person of the Year dinner took place at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, with an opening speech by Enrique Iglesias. It was followed by performances from David Bisbal, Luis Fonsi, Pausini, India and Franco De Vita, among other artists. It was an evening of musical highs and lows, with some puzzling performances playing alongside wonderful ones from the likes of Pausini, India, Natalia of Spanish group La Quinta Estación and David Bisbal, who, following his performance, walked from the stage to Juan Gabriel’s table to thank him for “your many words of advice.” Grammys Honors Juan Gabriel November 05, 2009 – Latin By Leila Cobo, L.A. HALF a million people dressed in the Olympic colours gathered in Madrid on Sunday carrying balloons and displaying banners, stickers and T-shirts. Chanting, “we deserve it,” the massive crowds in the Plaza de Cibeles clamoured for their city to host the 2016 games. Tourists, entire families, and fans of singer David Bisbal who had travelled to the capital for his concert were present. They created a human mosaic in the shape of the Olympic hand, which was joined by Bisbal himself at the centre. He then sang live at 20.30hrs, more than nine hours after the first Olympic campaigners had started to gather on the roundabout around the fountain and statue of the Greek goddess. The meeting was organised by 900 people, mostly over the internet. A helicopter flew over the Plaza and took photos of the massive mosaic. Now, people from Madrid – and, in fact, from all over Spain – are waiting with bated breath for the decision to be made by the Olympic committee in four days’ time.
